A Bullies Tale
The History of the British Bulldog in the American South, specifically Horry County, dates as far back as Colonial times. The British Bulldogs were among the first true Patriots to break away from their Loyalist chains. From their integral participation in the Battle of Breeds Hill (more Commonly known as Bunker Hill); Their stay with Sgt. Samuel Jerome (6x Great Grandfather to the Bulldog himself Sir Winston Churchill); Their travels with Colonel Henry Knox; The meeting of George Washington while fortifying the Dorchester Heights; and Their adventures with General Nathaniel Greene; The English Bulldogs would leave their lasting mark on not only American History but the world as we know it today.
It was while with General Greene that the British Bulldogs would assist in the Battles of NYC and New Jersey in 1776. They fought along side him at Trenton, Bradywine, and Germantown in 1777. They struggled, survived, and thrived during the winter at Valley Forge in 1778, and ultimately made their way South in December of 1780 as their companion became the South's Commanding Officer after the fall of Charleston.
On July14, 1781, under the approval of General Nathaniel Greene, Thomas Sumter, 'The GameCock' executed attack on British Troops at Monks Corner. It was a grueling time for the Bulldogs and is an Expedition that has become known as 'The Raid Of The Dog Days'. The fighting in the South brought together Brigadier General Thomas Sumter, Brigadier General Francis Marion (The swamp Fox), Lieutenant Colonel 'Light Horse' Henry Lee (The Father of Robert E.), and our very own Colonel Peter Horry, for which Horry County is named.
The Bulldogs fell in love with Colonel Horry, and as the Revolutionary War came to an end and they retired from military life, Conway became their home. Retirement brought them many stories to share over many cups of coffee and tea. Thus, the RiverTowne Bullies founded The BlackWater Coffee Co. named for their beloved Waccamaw River.
